SHANNON, Miss.—The Southern Poverty Law Center on Tuesday filed a federal lawsuit against Mississippi town officials who denied a business license to a lesbian who wants to open an LGBT bar.

The group alleges that four of the five members of the Shannon Board of Alderman in June denied Pat “PJ” Newton’s request to open a cafe and sports bar because they did not want her to open a business that “would cater to the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community.” Newton operated a bar called O’Hara’s in the same location from 1994-1998 that drew LGBT clientele from across northern Mississippi and surrounding areas.

The 2006 documentary “Small Town Gay Bar” featured Newton’s former business that had been renamed Rumors. It closed in 2007.
