Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Rodham Clinton spoke at a D.C. fundraiser Monday night to an audience of mostly lesbian donors.
The event was held at the Women’s Democratic Club and organized by longtime Democratic Party activist Claire Lucas and her partner Judy Dlugacz. A Clinton aide confirmed to the Blade that tickets cost $2,700 and the hosts raised $27,000; about 120 guests attended. The ticket included a photo opportunity with Clinton, according to one attendee.
Clinton reiterated her commitment to full equality for the LGBT community and said she joined everyone in the room in hoping that the Supreme Court would rule that same-sex marriage is protected by the Constitution. She went on to say she understood that the fight doesn’t end there.
She urged attendees to work to ensure that Congress changes and added she will run a 50-state campaign.
Dlugacz and Lucas introduced Clinton. Lesbian actress Meredith Baxter flew in from California for the event.
“It was a strong show of support from our community for Hillary and she reciprocated with a commitment to work with us when she is president,” said Democratic Party activist and Blade columnist Peter Rosenstein, who attended the fundraiser. “As she said it is only after the election that the real work begins and she is ready to do that work with us.”
