“Matt Shepard is a Friend of Mine” screens at Rockville United Church (355 Linthicum St., Rockville, Md.) Friday night at 7 p.m.

The documentary chronicles the life and death of Matthew Shepard, a gay man murdered in a hate crime. Michelle Jouse, Shepard’s close friend, directed the film. Interviews with his friends and family and never-before-seen footage all document the tragedy that led to the passing of the Matthew Shepard and James Byrd Jr. Hate Crimes Prevention Act.

Admission is free but a $5 donation is encouraged. For more details, visit rockvilleunitedchurch.org.
