Although Donald Trump is considered to have largely avoided attacks on LGBT people in his presidential campaign, on Saturday he criticized Ted Cruz for taking donations from “people who espouse gay marriage.”

The Republican presidential front-runner made the remarks on his Twitter feed days after he and Cruz had a contentious moment in the most recent GOP presidential debate over Cruz attacking Trump for having “New York values.”

Calling Cruz “the ultimate hypocrite,” Trump links to a 2015 story in the New York Times revealing Cruz attended a fundraiser for him in New York City hosted by gay business owners Mati Weiderpass and Ian Reisner.

Trump’s jab at Cruz comes as the presidential caucuses approach on Feb 2. in Iowa, a state where social conservatives and evangelicals dominate the Republican Party. Trump and Cruz have alternated for the top spot in the state in polls.

The Washington Blade has placed a call to the Cruz campaign to respond to criticism over accepting money from same-sex marriage supporters. Cruz has made opposition to same-sex marriage a cornerstone of his campaign and has introduced a U.S. constitutional amendment that would reverse the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision in favor of same-sex marriage nationwide.

Gregory Angelo, president of Log Cabin Republicans, downplayed the anti-gay implications of Trump’s attack on Cruz.

“Trump was pointing out an obvious hypocrisy,” Angelo said. “Sen. Cruz was happy to embrace ‘New York values’ as long as they translated into a financial contribution to his campaign.”

The Blade has also placed a call to the Trump campaign to clarify whether he would accept or reject donations from individuals who support same-sex marriage.

TJ Helmstetter, spokesperson for the Democratic National Committee, echoed Trump’s criticism of Cruz for opposing LGBT rights as he takes money from gay donors.

“Ted Cruz is a hypocrite who raises money from rich, gay New York donors and then spews venom at LGBT people and everyday New Yorkers,” Helmstetter said. “The rest of the Republican field isn’t any better – the GOP presidential candidates raise money from big bucks donors while supporting policies that keep regular, hardworking Americans down. Whether it’s Cruz, Trump, or Rubio, that’s the Republican MO.”

Trump has previously attacked another GOP contender for accepting support from a donor who backs LGBT rights. In November, Trump criticized Marco Rubio for accepting support from GOP philanthropist Paul Singer, who’s made significant donations to LGBT rights causes.

In December, Trump declared qualified support for the First Amendment Defense Act, religious freedom legislation seen to enable to anti-LGBT discrimination. Trump said as president he would sign the legislation if Congress considers it a priority and sends the legislation to his desk.

  • It should be the shameful brain-drain gay donors contributing to Ted Cruz’ campaign that are body slammed for trying to empower an enemy of the GLBT community who is committed to rolling by all the gains we’ve made as well as preventing any others!

  • As I’m watching nsmbc, Chris Matthew’s. I see Trump standing along side Sara Palin who is running off at the mouth as if she has an education and knows what she is talking about. For a moment I thought I was watching FOXNEWS. There she stands, supporting The Donald as if she is running for vice president once more. Lets stop her again. Please, all you democrats out there vote in the November, 2016 election. They need to be stopped. As I understand it all the children living in Flint under the age of 6 years have been poisoned. We have the votes…lets roll!

And Inm3921, I know the kind of people who are gay that identify with Cruz. They suck in the worst way. Traders to LGBTQ.

  • Mark Cichewicz, you need to hope Trump wins the nomination . This would insure no
republican would get any public funds and a Democrat would win like
last time. Trump must be the new pig with lipstick.
