Janelle Monáe joins Harriet Tubman biopic

Janelle Monáe has joined the cast of “Harriet,” a biopic about Harriet Tubman, according to Variety.

The cast also includes Cynthia Erivo, who will portray Tubman,  Leslie Odom Jr., Joe Alwyn, Jennifer Nettles and Clarke Peters. The screenplay was penned by Kasi Lemmons and Gregory Allen Howard. Lemmons will also direct.

“Harriet” starts filming in Virginia next month but no news of a release date.

Monáe will also star in the animated film “UglyDolls,” based on the plush toy line. In addition to voice acting, she will record music for the soundtrack.

Her former acting credentials include “Moonlight” and “Hidden Figures.” She also lent her voice as Dr. Monae in “Rio 2.”
