SAG Award noms recognize LGBTQ content
The Screen Actors Guild has announced the nominees for its 2019 awards presentation, and like the Golden Globes nominations earlier this week, there are multiple nods for projects with LGBTQ-relevant content and performers.
Leading the nominations for films with queer content is “Bombshell,” the film about the Fox News sexual harassment scandal starring Charlize Theron, Nicole Kidman, and Margot Robbie. The movie was nominated for Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture. Theron was nominated for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Leading Role, while Kidman and Robbie (who portrays an LGBTQ character) each got nods for their supporting roles.
Also nominated for a supporting role was Jennifer Lopez in “Hustlers,” the Lorene Scafaria film that features several out and allied performers, including Trace Lysette, Cardi B., and Lizzo.
Welsh actor Taron Egerton, who received near-universal praise for his performance as Elton John in “Rocketman,” was nominated for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Leading Role.
The biopic “Judy,” about the last year in the life of LGBTQ icon Judy Garland, received a nod for star Renée Zellweger as Oustanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Leading Role.
In the SAG nominations for television, the acclaimed British comedy “Fleabag,” which featured a second season storyline in which the title character is attracted to another woman, snagged nods for its writer and star, Phoebe Waller-Bridge, as Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Comedy Series. For the same series, out actor Andrew Scott was nominated for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Comedy Series as “Hot Priest.”
“Schitt’s Creek,” the queer fan-favorite comedy from out creator Dan Levy and his father Eugene Levy, also picked up a nomination in the Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Comedy Series category. In the same category was Amazon’s “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel,” which introduced an overtly queer storyline in its third season.
Hulu’s “The Handmaid’s Tale,” a show which features several queer characters, was nominated for Outstanding Ensemble in a Drama Series.
In the category of Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Drama Series, actress Jodie Comer picked up a nod for “Killing Eve,” in which she plays a bisexual assassin.
Rounding out the nominations for queer content, Netflix’s “GLOW,” a comedy drama about female wrestlers in the eighties which features several lesbian, bisexual, and gay characters, was recognized with a nomination for Outstanding Action Performance by a Stunt Ensemble in a Comedy or Drama Series.
Though not specifically queer in content, LGBTQ favorites “Big Little Lies” (HBO) and “The Crown” (Netflix) were each nominated for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series.
The full list of nominations can be found on the SAG website.
