Jason Mraz got candid about his sexuality in an interview with Billboard revealing that he considers his sexuality “two spirit” and that he has had sexual experiences with men.

Speculation swirled about his sexuality after the 40-year-old singer/songwriter penned a poem for Billboard’s “Love Letter to the LGBTQ Community.” One line from the poem had people questioning if Mraz was coming out as bisexual.

“We still have a long way to go. But know. I am bi your side. All ways,” Mraz wrote.

In the new interview, he says he didn’t expect people to pay so much attention to the line. But Mraz says he had sexual experiences with men while he was dating his wife Christina Carano. The couple married in 2015. He credits her for helping him understand his sexuality.

“Honestly, I didn’t realize it was going to be so telling,” Mraz told Billboard. “But I’ve had experiences with men, even while I was dating the woman who became my wife. It was like, ‘Wow, does that mean I am gay?’ And my wife laid it out for me. She calls it ‘two spirit,’ which is what the Native Americans call someone who can love both man and woman. I really like that.”

In a 2005 interview, Mraz admitted that he was sexually attracted to men including his gay best friend. However, at the time he had not explored sexual relationships with men.

Mraz releases “Know,” his first album since 2014, on Aug. 10.
