Huntsman uses support for civil unions to fundraise for Presidential run from gay donors
WASHINGTON — California Log Cabin Republicans vice chair, and Jon Huntsman campaign staffer, Charles T. Moran, has sent a fundraising letter on behalf of the campaign to prominent gay Republican donors touting the former Utah governor’s relatively gay-friendly stances, including support for hospital visitation rights for same-sex spouses and civil unions.
According to Politico, Moran’s letter comes on the heels of a June 15 Jon Huntsman fundraiser in Washington D.C. where the candidate met with prominent LGBT Republican leaders from organizations like GOProud and Log Cabin Republicans. Both Jimmy LaSalvia, Executive Director of GOProud and Christian Berle, Deputy Executive Director of the national Log Cabin Republicans were in attendance to an event which Ben Smith of Politico described as having “an unusually diverse Republican crowd.”
On Tuesday the Huffington Post reported that when pressed about the possibility of states like New York joining the already five states and Washington D.C. in recognizing same-sex marriage, Huntsman said he would respect those states’ laws and not seek a Federal law barring such unions.
“I would respect the state’s decision on that,” Huntsman told reporters.
