Blaze destroys Fire Island landmark

FIRE ISLAND PINES, N.Y. — The Pavilion, Fire Island Pines’s beacon of a night club, was destroyed last night in a fast moving blaze that took out several structures on the block, according to the A.P.

Other reports say that in addition to The Pavilion, the Sip N’ Twirl dance bar, and the Pines Bistro — among other homes and structures — were all also destroyed. The fire affected the harbor commercial district in one of America’s most well-known summer gay resort destinations.

Firefighters from across the region — including from the mainland — responded to the 9:15 p.m. alarm. 300 firefighters fought the blaze in the largest firefighter response on Long Island since 1995, according to The Edge Networks.
