NEW YORK — Columbia University’s psychiatry department is hoping to develop better health coverage for LGBT people through a new research program, the Columbia Spectator, the school’s newspaper, reported Monday.

Launched last month, the initiative aims to produce policy-relevant research, develop medical and mental-health services and promote outreach in local communities on gay health, the paper said.

The idea for the initiative came after an Institute of Medicine report, funded by the National Institutes of Health, found that researchers still have a lot to learn about the diversity of LGBT populations.

Faculty in the department said they hope eventually to build a full LGBT research institute at the university.
