GAINESVILLE, Fla. — Nearing the end of his first two-year term, gay Gainesville, Fla., mayor Craig Lowe will likely face tough criticism after a crash last week resulting in a drunk driving arrest.
Lowe was found by police asleep at the wheel of his car, which had suffered major front-end damage and had four flat tires. Lowe told police he’d fallen asleep at the wheel after having three beers. Along with the DUI, he was charged with property damage and careless driving.
“I apologize for the harm that this situation has caused to my friends, supporters, and the citizens of Gainesville,” Lowe said in a statement after his release. “Moving forward, I will work hard to regain your confidence and trust.”
Lowe faces a run-off election in April against former city council member, Ed Braddy, who was himself arrested for a DUI in 2006.
