Md. Rep. Mizeur: You can’t stop us!

“The one thing that the opponents of this bill are trying to accomplish, is the one thing that you can’t stop us from doing. You can’t stop us from loving each other, you can’t stop us from getting married, you can’t stop us from pledging to forever to our God and to each other, and to support each other in the toughest of times. You can’t stop that.” – openly gay Md. Rep. Heather Mizeur during the March 2011 marriage debate on the Md. Assembly floor.

  • Will history repeat itself in Maryland? One of the disastrous mistakes in the prop 8 debacle in California was SF mayor Newsome rousing the opposition with his comment “We’re going to have gay marriage whether you like it or not!” Delegate Mizeur’s arrogant comment has that same quality – she has just recruited more anti-gays to work vigorously against us than all the opposition leaders together.

For the last 40 years, Republicans and the activist Christian Right have out-maneuvered us. If we had their political skills, then justice would have won out long ago. Eventually we’ll win anyway, because the truth is on our side, but Mizeur is hindering our progress. She should learn a basic rule of politics – don’t start crowing before you’ve actually won. Better still, have some humility even after winning, because we win not by our own numbers, but only by rallying enough straight friends to support us.
