NEW ORLEANS — A black transgender woman was shot to death in the Crescent City on Feb. 10.

BreakOUT!, a local advocacy group that is a member of the National Coalition of Anti-Violence Programs, identified the victim as Penny Proud. The NCAVP in a press release linked to a New Orleans Times-Picayune article that indicates she was shot to death around 1:30 a.m. near the intersection of Ursulines and North Claiborne Avenues in the city’s Tremé neighborhood.

The newspaper did not specifically identify Proud by name, but it described her as “male.”

Proud is the sixth trans woman of color who has been reported killed so far this year. They include Lamia Beard who was shot to death in Norfolk, Va., on Jan. 18.
