Gay rights champion to receive Legend award

The Human Symphony Foundation hosts “Voices of Change,” the Living Legends Awards for Service to Humanity, at the Cultural Arts Center at Montgomery College (7995 Georgia Ave., Silver Spring, Md.) on Saturday, Sept. 10 at 6 p.m.

Rev. Frank Schaefer, Mami Chalmers and Izzeldin Abuelaish will be honored. Schaefer was defrocked by the United Methodist Church in 2013 for officiating his son’s same-sex wedding, but was reinstated in 2014. Chalmers is a civil rights activist and Abuelaish is a doctor and author. Formal attire is required. Admission is free.
