The parents of a Republican candidate running for Senate have given a generous donation to a political campaign but the recipient wasn’t their son’s political party.
GOP candidate Kevin Nicholson is running against Leah Vukmir for the Republican ticket in Wisconsin. The winner will take on Democrat Sen. Tammy Baldwin for a seat in the Senate.
Federal records show that Donna and Michael Nicholson donated $2,700 to Baldwin’s campaign in December.
The couple did not publicly comment on their donation but reportedly have a history of donating to Democratic candidates.
Nicholson made a statement to CNN that he and his parents differ when it comes to politics.
“My parents have a different worldview than I do, and it is not surprising that they would support a candidate like Tammy Baldwin who shares their perspective,” Nicholson told CNN.
He continued, “I’m a conservative today not because I was born one, but because of the experience I earned as a Marine in combat, my experience as a husband and father, my choice to be a Christian, the schools I chose to attend and the decision to pursue the career that I have. Regardless of who may disagree with my life decisions, I would not trade these experiences for anything, and they will always guide my views as Wisconsin’s next U.S. Senator.”
Nicholson and Vukmir will go head to head in the GOP primary in August.
