Lena Waithe will be honored with the Trailblazer Award at the MTV Movie & TV Awards, Deadline reports. The award “recognizes game-changing creators with fresh and fearless voices in entertainment.”
In 2017, Waithe became the first woman of color to receive the Emmy for Outstanding Writing for a Comedy Series. The episode, titled “Thanksgiving” from the Netflix comedy series “Master of None,” told the story of her character Denise’s coming out over a series of Thanksgivings. Waithe is also the creator and executive producer of the Showtime drama “The Chi,” which follows the lives of people in the South Side of Chicago.
“Lena is shaking up Hollywood and breaking cultural boundaries through her innovative and authentic storytelling,” said Amy Doyle, general manager of MTV, VH1 and Logo, in a statement. “Her unwavering passion for equality and inclusion make her the perfect recipient for this year’s Trailblazer Award.”
The MTV Movie & TV Awards airs on MTV on Monday, June 18 at 9 p.m.
