The Hungarian State Opera has canceled its remaining 15 show dates for the musical “Billy Elliot” after the musical was accused of “promoting homosexuality.”

The conservative publication Magyar Idok published an op-ed under the name Zsofia N. Horvath on June 1 which called the production a “scandalous show” writing that “the propagation of homosexuality cannot be a national goal when the population is getting older and smaller and our country is threatened by invasion.”

Director Hungarian State Opera Szilveszter Okovacs responded to the op-ed in the same publication on June 2 writing “Just because something that is an undeniable part of life appears onstage at the opera, it doesn’t mean we are promoting it.”

Okovacs says the show dates were pulled due to low ticket sales.

“Billy Elliot” is based on the 2000 film about a coal miner’s son who gives up boxing to pursue being a ballet dancer.

According to BBC News, the musical has been performed at the opera for three seasons since its debut in 2016.

The op-ed’s author is also under scrutiny. There is no known journalist under the name Zsofia N. Horvath and it is suspected to be a pseudonym.
