Celebrities took over Halloween with their best costumes

Ellen DeGeneres, Neil Patrick Harris, Gus Kenworthy and more

Lots of celebrities couldn’t pass up an opportunity to dress up in their spookiest (or silliest) get-ups this year. Whether it was Dorothy from “Wizard of Oz,” Shrek or their celebrity mentor, the stars weren’t afraid to get in the Halloween spirit.

Neil Patrick Harris, his husband David Burtka and their eight-year-old twins Gideon Scott and Harper Grace always go full throttle for Halloween. This year was no different as the family set up a Halloween photo shoot dressed as the ghosts on The Haunted Mansion ride at Disney World and Disneyland.

Ellen DeGeneres poked fun at “The Bachelor” by becoming a contestant on the long-running reality competition.

Gus Kenworthy paid tribute to his fellow Olympian and friend, Adam Rippon.

Later, Kenworthy offered his best Dorothy from “Wizard of Oz.”

Jesse Tyler Ferguson became a beekeeper.

Janelle Monáe transformed into Willy Wonka.

Harry Styles recreated Elton John’s blinged out baseball uniform he wore while performing at Dodgers Stadium in 1975.

Halsey embodied “Batman” villain Poison Ivy.

This John Waters interview has been edited for readability — but perhaps not human decency

By WESLEY CASE | At 80 years old, John Waters is still the ideal dinner guest — incisively sharp, quick-witted and funny as hell.

The chic Baltimore native proved it again and again in a recent Zoom interview, calling from his summer home in Provincetown, Mass.

The occasion was the Blu-ray releases of two of his movies — the 1977 dark comedy “Desperate Living” and his enduring 1988 musical “Hairspray” — on June 23 by the Criterion Collection, which publishes restorations of films it deems culturally important. The Criterion stamp of approval has become the gold standard among cinephiles.

“It’s like getting an award,” said Waters, who wrote and directed both films.
