Gay bounce artist Big Freedia has been charged with theft of government funds, according to Billboard.

Billboard reports that a bill of information filed on Tuesday says the New Orleans rapper, real name Freddie Ross, illegally took money from the Department of Housing and Urban Development between 2010 and 2014.

The rapper released a statement to Pitchfork in response.

“I quickly found myself in a new economic structure and, frankly, knew little about how to handle my money,” Big Freedia told Pitchfork. “It wasn’t until recently (after I had stopped receiving housing vouchers) that it became very clear I had received assistance to which I wasn’t entitled.”

“It was an oversight—but one that I take full responsibility for,” Big Freedia continued.

Big Freedia was recently featured in Beyonce’s song “Formation” and has collaborated with RuPaul. His reality show “Big Freedia: Queen of Bounce,” airing on Fuse, was recently renewed for a fifth season.
