Democrat Chris Pappas on Tuesday defeated Republican Eddie Edwards in the race to succeed retiring New Hampshire Congresswoman Carol Shea-Porter.

WMUR, a New Hampshire television, is reporting Pappas defeated Edwards by a 53-45 percent margin with 73 percent of precincts in the state’s 1st Congressional District reporting.

Pappas, a member of New Hampshire’s Executive Council whose family owns a restaurant in Manchester, the state’s largest city, will be the first openly gay member of Congress from the Granite State.
