TAMPA — A local franchise of the gay-friendly restaurant chain, Hamburger Mary’s, is introducing a “hate free” southern-style chicken sandwich for the month of August, directly challenging Chick-fil-A President Dan Cathy’s recent anti-gay remarks.

“With a flair for wit, Mary’s is adding her voice to the increasing number of campaigns to counter Chick-fil-A CEO Dan Cathy’s controversial public stance against marriage equality… by offering a southern-style chicken sandwich while advocating diversity,” said a press release by the San Francisco-based company, whose generally gay-centric neighborhood locations are known for drag queen servers, risqué entre names and campy décor.
