Johnson attends the daily White House press briefings and is a member of the White House Correspondents' Association. He's worked with the Washington Blade since 2008 and was a founding employee of the paper when it relaunched under local ownership in 2009. Before coming to the Blade, Johnson covered defense issues for Inside Washington Publishers and previously wrote for MIRS newsletter, a Lansing-based publication covering state political news in Michigan.
