Members of the D.C. Gay Flag Football League travel teams headed to Denver for Gay Bowl XVIII, held Sept. 13-16.
The travel teams representing on the men’s side were the D.C. Admirals, Washington Generals, D.C. Commanders and Delta Force. The league women were represented by the Washington Senators.
After winning six straight games, the Washington Generals were crowned Gay Bowl XVIII Division A champions when they defeated the San Diego Toros 29-13. Two Generals players were given tournament honors with Jeremy Steslicki named offensive MVP and Mark Summerside named defensive MVP.
Members of the Generals squad were Captain Donald A. Mitchell, James Santos, Jeremy Steslicki, Marvin Washington, Brandon Waggoner, Miles Simpson, Oliver Jacob, Matt Pearce, Evan Binder, Earl W. Armstrong, Peter Pham, Barry Mauck and Paul Pham.
The win marked the first time a D.C.-based travel team has won Gay Bowl since they captured consecutive championships in 2003-2004. This year’s tournament boasted 57 teams from 22 cities.
Season XVII starts this Sunday for the 20 teams that make up the league.
