PORTLAND — Clergy, mental health professionals and LGBT activists in Oregon testified this week in favor of a bill aimed at banning “conversion” therapy for gay youth, the Oregonian reports.

Basic Rights Oregon championed the Youth Mental Health Protection Act, which would prevent licensed mental health care providers in Oregon from practicing “conversion” therapy, which operates from the stance, rejected by the American Psychiatric Association, that homosexuality is a mental disorder.

California, New Jersey and Washington, D.C. have passed legislation to ban the practice. Lawmakers in a dozen other states are considering similar legislation.
